You can use just about any coffee in a French press. However, some are better than others. I recommend using whole beans or coarse-ground coffee.
I do not recommend using fine-ground coffee in a French press. When using finely ground coffee, the grind can seep through the plunger in your French press too easily. This not only leaves grinds in your cup but if the grinds flow too easily through the press, it is not steeping long enough to extract all the flavors. No one wants a weak cup of coffee or one full of grinds.
There are many great brands of grinders you can buy to use for making French press coffee. I have a whole article on it so you can find the best coffee grinder.
French roast, or any that is your favorite, is a great option in a French press. You do not need to use French roast in a French press. Any mild, dark, or decaf coffee will work. Just make sure you are not using coffee that has a fine grind to it.
