Sweet pears are stewed with sugar and cinnamon for a sweet treat. They are great for breakfast or for dessert as a topping or accompaniment. This quick and easy recipe makes wonderfully spiced pears.
Peel and core the pears. Then cut into quarters or thick slices and place in a bowl. Drizzle the lemon juice over them.
Place the water & sugar into a small pot that has a lid. Turn it on medium heat and simmer, stirring occasionally until the sugar dissolves, and cook for 1 minute.
Add the vanilla and cinnamon to the simple syrup mixture. Stir to combine.
Add the pears into the pot. Bring to a simmer again and then turn the heat down to low and put the lid on the pot. Continue to cook until soft, 5-10 minutes. Soft ripe pears will take 5 minutes. For hard pears that are not ripe, cook for 10 minutes.
Once done cooking, enjoy. You can use it to top breakfast dishes such as pancakes or yogurt. You can also use it for desserts such as pound cake or ice cream.
Stewed pears can be stored in an air-tight container for up to a week in the refrigerator. They freeze well too in an air-tight container for up to a month. Just thaw in the refrigerator overnight before using.
