Ingredients
Just 3 ingredients plus water is all this fried Oreo recipe needs. So simple, right? I mean why spend $20 at the fair when it's so basic & cheaper to make it at home!
I also recommend the optional confectioner's sugar for dusting at the end too.
Here are important notes for some ingredients:
- Oreo Cookies - the classic chocolate cookie with cream filling is used or try any fun Oreo Variety.
- Cooking Oil - a high heat neutral tasting oil such as vegetable or canola oil.
- Krusteaz Pancake Mix - the ready made bag or box that needs just water makes this the easiest recipe ever.
- Water - to mix up the pancake batter coating.
- Powdered Sugar - for dusting the tops when serving.

How to Make Deep-Fried Oreos
This recipe takes only 10 minutes to make once the oil comes to frying temperature. All you need to do is mix the batter while the oil is heating up, dunk in a cookie, toss to coat, & fry in the oil. Easy peasy.
Here are the easy steps for frying Oreo cookies:
- Batter and Fry
- Drain and Cool
See the step-by-step instructions with photos below plus the recipe card at the end of the post.
1 - Batter and Fry
In a medium-sized pot, add the oil so that is comes up the sides ⅓ of the way up the pot. Do not over fill or the oil will splatter and bubble up which is dangerous.
Turn the heat on medium-high and let it begin to heat up. It will be ready when an instant read thermometer for oil to reach 375°F.
In a medium-sized mixing bowl add the pancake mix and water. Whisk until smooth and no lumps are visible.
Add a cookie to the batter and toss to coat both sides. I like to fry 1-2 at a time, not more or it crowds the pot & reduces the heat too much which makes the dough soggy not crisp on the outside.
Carefully lower the battered Oreo into the hot oil using a slotted spoon or tongs.
Let it cook until it is golden brown, about 1 minute each side. Use a slotted spoon or tongs to rotate and remove them when ready - CAUTION the cookies & oil are hot!
2 - Drain & Cool
Once the cookies are down, place them on a plate lined with paper towels. This helps drain the remaining oil as they cool. This is how they should look - medium-brown/golden on the outside.
The cookies are done and ready to eat once they are cool to the touch. The filling will still be hot so be careful but I get that it is hard to wait!
Plate the fried Oreos once cool enough to eat. As you can see, they are golden brown and puffy.
Once you bite or cut into them, the inside layer of chocolate wafer cookie and the cream filling should still be visible but also slightly gooey and melty.
NOTE: if you want a more crisp & crunchy inner cookie see the Recipe Tips section below.
Serving & Storing
Serve these while fresh & hot. They are best eaten within minutes of frying.
I do not recommend making these ahead of time, storing, or saving some for leftovers. They will be soggy & greasy when you reheat them.
What to Serve with Fried Oreo Cookies : I like them simply dusted with powdered sugar. You can also serve them like you would beignets - with some berry jam, chocolate sauce, ice cream, or whipped cream.
Recipe Tips & Behind the Scenes
Here's my recipe for success - including what I learned when testing, fun stories, recipe history, and more.
- #1 Tip - make sure the oil is 375°F. If it is too cold the batter will be soggy as it soaks in the oil versus making it crisp on the outside. If it is too hot, the outer crust will be too dark or burn before the inner batter cooks or leaving it raw.
- FROZEN COOKIES - we also sometimes use frozen Oreos if we want the cookie to be still crisp on the inside & not melty gooey. Both are amazing!
- Substitute with Gluten-Free Oreos, Hydrox, Trader Joe's JoJos or any cream-filled chocolate sandwich cookie.
- Try other Oreo flavors such as peanut butter, Double Stuf, lemon, golden, mint, or dark.
- A deep fryer with a basket also works for this recipe if you own one. I typically use mine for savory dishes like Garlic Butter Wings so I don't use it for sweet options like this.
- I recommend 2 per serving but my kids sure can indulge in 3-4 if I am not watching! How many will you eat?
FAQ
You don't want to distract from the taste of the sweet cookies and pancake-like coating. I recommend a neutral tasting oil for frying; canola, safflower, sunflower, or grapeseed work best.
It is important to keep the oil near 375°F for the best tasting and golden delicious fried Oreo cookies. See my #1 tip in the section above for more information.
If you do not have Krusteaz brand mix that uses just water, you can substitute with any pancake batter. Make your own from scratch or use like Bisquick, Pearl Milling, or Great Value (simply make per the label instructions)
