I have been getting the mixed box from ButcherBox since 2021. I can confidently say after using this online meat subscription service for a long time, I could not be happier. I did not feel comfortable doing an honest review until I really used the service for a long time and felt it was consistently offering quality for your money.
I bet you wondering, but how does the meat taste? After over a year of cooking with ButcherBox beef, pork, chicken, and seafood - I can 100% say it has all been amazing. The ribeye steaks are marbled beautifully for a juicy steak every time. The corned beef I slow cooked for St. Patrick's Day was tender and not too salty! All of the chicken products have cooked up moist & flavorful. See the end of this article for some great recipes I have made using ButcherBox products.

How Does ButcherBox Work?
This is not meat in bulk. You do not need to buy half a cow or purchase 10 pounds of ground beef to get these prices. Of course, you can get 10 pounds if that is what you want. But you can order that much or a bundle, you just don't have to.
ButcherBox often has bundles and specials for sale which are a great deal. I have purchased the bacon bundle and the BBQ bundle before. The ultimate keto bundle or free cuts are popular choices for those on a low-carb diet.
Types of Boxes
There are 5 different types of subscription boxes to choose from. A new Basic Box was just introduced for new subscribers and starts as low as $99! The other boxes range from a curated all-beef box including 8-11 pounds of high-quality beef to a custom box of beef, pork, and chicken where you pick the cuts every month. I have the custom box and it meets all our needs for our family of 5.
When using ButcherBox you get to decide the frequency too. You can have yours delivered based on your needs. Going on vacation, no problem, you can delay deliveries if needed too - and not lose any subscription perks like your ground beef for life.
How Does ButcherBox Delivery Work?
ButcherBox delivers directly to your door. First-class shipping is free. All meat is shipped frozen to ensure freshness. Each ButcherBox is packed safely in an insulated box that is also eco-friendly. Each order will remain at the optimal temperature and may include dry ice if needed.
I have never had any product spoilage with my deliveries. The boxes come in good shape and are filled with dry ice & packing materials that have kept everything frozen. All the beef, chicken, pork, and seafood are wrapped well and I have never had any leakage.
Does ButcherBox Deliver to Hawaii, Alaska, or Canada?
If you are in the 48 contiguous states, ButcherBox will deliver to you. Per ButcherBox's website at the time of this article, they do not yet deliver to Hawaii, Alaska, or Canada.
How Much Does ButcherBox Cost?
The prices for the monthly subscription service ButcherBox are competitive When compared to big box stores like Costco or Sam's Club, the prices for organic chicken or grass-fed beef can be less expensive through ButcherBox. It definitely beats specialty stores like Whole Foods or local butcher shops.
The membership prices range from $146-$306 per box. This averages between $5-6 per meal. You can choose between 5 different boxes and 2 different sizes, classic or big boxes. That is 10 ways to join ButcherBox. Plus the new Basic Box is only $99 for new subscribers.
The custom box is what I get and that is $169 for the classic size. I get it once a month and it is more than enough for our family of 5. We eat meat on average 4-5x to a week and this box delivers between 9-14 pounds of meat (depending on the cuts I pick out). I may pick up other protein items from various stores when needing something special. But about 90% of what we eat comes from ButcherBox.
ButcherBox vs Store Prices
Here are a few estimated price comparisons based on what I found for ButcherBox versus local stores here in Northern California. This is based on an estimated 10 pounds of meat (grass-fed steaks in a variety of cuts, organic chicken, pork, & seafood combined) and the % savings you get when buying through ButcherBox.
- ButcherBox vs Costco or Sam's Club - 13% savings
- ButcherBox vs Specialty Stores or Butchers - 13% savings
- ButcherBox vs Grocery Store Prices - 18% savings
- ButcherBox vs Whole Foods - 43% savings
Just a few sample prices for some ButcherBox Exclusive Member Deals in 2021. These are all add-on deals that can be added to any box. I compared these to a few local stores or online prices found. It was hard even finding some cuts that are grass-fed locally but I tried my best. Another reason ButcherBox is the best!
- 2- 10oz Grass-fed Ribeye Steaks for $30 = $24/lb vs $27.95 @ Costco
- 4 - 6oz Grass-fed Filet Mignon for $55 = $36/lb vs $42.50 @ Specialty Meats
- 7.5# of Organic Ground Chicken for $50 = $6.66/lb vs $9.99 @ Whole Foods
- 6# Organic Chicken Wings for $36 = $6/lb vs $9.99 @ Safeway
- 8.4# St Louis Ribs (3 racks) for $44 = $14/rack vs $16.99 @ Costco
- 2# Wild-Caught Cod for $29.00 = $14.50/lb vs $14.99 @ Safeway

ButcherBox Meat Quality
ButcherBox takes great care in sourcing the highest quality meats. They believe in working with people who raise animals humanely and do their best to make this planet healthy and sustainable. Their beef is 100% grass-fed/grass-finished & pasture-raised. The chicken is free-range and USDA-certified organic. The pork is humanely raised in crate-free pastures.
All of these meats are never given antibiotics or hormones. This is what ensures the products delivered through ButchBox are of the highest quality and are juicy, flavorful, and healthy. Grass-fed beef has helped my immune disease tremendously - no more inflammation from grains & thankful for the Omega-3s it provides. We are all different so always speak with your physician about a healthy diet for you.
In addition, seafood is wild-caught, sustainably harvested, and has never any added colors or additives.
Pros & Cons of ButcherBox
If you like to make lists and do a side-by-side comparison, you are like me. Here is a list of the pros and cons of subscribing to ButcherBox for your meat delivery. After using their service for a long time, here is what I came up with so you too will know the benefits and what makes ButcherBox totally worth every penny.
PROS | CONS |
High-Quality grass-fed beef, organic poultry, humanely-raised pork, & wild-caught seafood | Only the Custom Box lets you select your cuts of meat |
Amazing New Member Deal | It May be more expensive than big box or grocery store sales. |
The flexibility of 5 Box choices, 2 sizes, & different price points. (including one that is customizable!) | Not all cuts of meat are available at all times |
Convenient with free delivery to your door. Eco-friendly packages with dry-ice and temperature control delivery. | Not being able to touch & see your cut of beef, chicken, pork, or seafood before purchasing (ie marbling, size, etc) |
Flexible frequency of delivery, including options to delay due to vacations, etc. | |
Member specials, sales, & seasonal add-on items are always being offered. |
Negative ??
To be 100% honest, I have had no negative experiences with ButcherBox. As mentioned, the meat has all been of great quality. The only true negative I can think of is that there is not every cut of meat at all times to choose from. For example, we love baby back ribs, and often only St-Louis ribs are available. So I have to plan ahead and stock up when they are available.
All the packaging has been well done and when thawing meat it remains fresh. The only thing I would say to watch out for is, to thaw your meat in the refrigerator with the packed meat placed inside a baking dish or rimmed pan. Some of the packaging as it shrinks and defrosts may have some leakage. In over a year, this has only happened to me 2x.
ButcherBox Review for 2022
All of this information is based on pricing and my experience as of 2022. As mentioned, I have been using the service for over a year. I started in 2021 and every ButcherBox has been delivered on time, the meat was frozen and sealed, and every order was complete and cooked up deliciously.
Are you like me and making it a priority to eat high-quality beef, organic chicken, pork, and seafood? Do you have to go to several stores, butcher shops, and farmer's markets? I used to but no more running around for me.
Save yourself time and money and start ordering ButcherBox today!
Is ButcherBox a Good Deal?
So to summarize, the bottom line is people ask me if ButcherBox is a good deal. YES! Not only are you saving money on high-quality meats, but it is convenient. It is also a company that works hard at ensuring animals are humanely raised and the planet is taken care of. All things that I am happy about make me a loyal customer.
I started my blog years ago and I do not promote any products or services unless I really love them and find them beneficial for my readers. I knew that ButcherBox would be a meat delivery service my readers would love too. So I became an affiliate to spread the word and get you the best deals possible.
