    Coconut Milkshake

    Jump to Recipe

All you need is 2 ingredients for a sweet, creamy, & dreamy coconut milkshake. It's an easy blended shake with a tropical twist that is hard to resist.

Milkshakes are great in summer but let's be real - a cold, smooth ice cream drink is amazing any time of year. Enjoy this as a snack, dessert, or drink along with a gourmet Wagyu hamburger.

If you love coconut milk, this is the recipe for you. It is sweet, thick, creamy, & well, coconutty! I created this recipe when I had a bit left over after making a half batch of my Creamy Coconut Chicken. I am so glad I whipped this drink up.

    Ingredients for Coconut Milkshake

Nothing crazy going on here - just 2 simple ingredients are needed to make a coconut shake. This recipe uses ice cream to great the classic thick texture. No ice to water this down!

Labeled ingredients for making homemade coconut shake.
    • Vanilla Ice Cream - the classic flavor is the cold creamy base for this shake.
    • Coconut Milk - full-fat thick coconut milk for the sweet island taste.
    • Whipped Cream - optional topping
    • Sweet Coconut Flakes - optional topping

See the recipe card for quantities.

How to Make a Coconut Shake in the Blender

Milkshakes are blended drinks; therefore, you will need a blender for this recipe. If you are making one, a single-serving blender cup will do. But if you are doubling or tripling this recipe, use a full-sized blender pitcher or bowl.

Here are the easy steps for making ...

    1. Blend the Shake
    2. Serve & Top

    1 - Blend the Shake

This recipe makes one shake. I use my Ninja Blender with the single-serving capsule. It blends beautifully in just seconds.

    Ice cream in blender cup.

Scoop one cup of vanilla ice cream into the blender cup or pitcher.

Blender cup with ice cream and coconut milk in it.

Add coconut milk and place the lid on the blender cup. Attach to your blender base. Blend for 30 seconds or until smooth & fluffy.

Hint: Store the leftover coconut milk to use later. It is easy to learn how to freeze coconut milk.

    2 - Serve & Top

Pour the homemade coconut shake into a drinking glass.

Top with optional whipped cream. Add a straw, large milkshake straws work best.

The cool creamy shake is best when enjoyed immediately.

    Substitutions & Variations

Here are some great recipe variations & ingredient substitutions that can be made. Add, omit, or use one of these alternatives for other delicious recipe ideas for a coconut shake.

These may help you enjoy this recipe even with dietary, health, or personal nutritional preferences. It is already a gluten-free.

    Substitutions

    • Ice Cream - Instead of regular vanilla ice cream use a non-dairy one made from almond, soy, oat, or coconut milk.
    • Coconut Milk - Use low-fat if you want a thinner shake.

Diary-free/vegan ice cream brands include So Delicious (coconut milk or soy), Breyer's (oat milk), Sprouts Markets (coconut milk), Oatly, (oat milk), or Favorite Day (almond milk).

    Variations

    • Avocado - Add ½ a ripe avocado for an ice cream version of Sinh To Bo (Vietnamese avocado shake).
    • Deluxe - Add a handful of sweet coconut flakes to the shake before blending.

For another great shake recipe, try the Stroopwafel Milkshake. It's loaded with cookie wafers, caramel, & cinnamon.

    Top Tips

All of these great tips are shared in the post. But these are so good and important they are worth mentioning again so you don't miss them.

    • For a velvety taste, use only full-fat ice cream & coconut milk.
    • Top with whipped cream for a fancy drink or dessert.

    FAQ

Can I add coconut meat or flakes to a shake?

Adding chunks of fresh coconut or regular/sweetened flakes to a shake will make it chunky. Pieces of coconut meat may be unpleasant to some people. If you wish to have a milkshake with bits & pieces of real coconut, add some. I recommend adding a small amount at first to make sure it is to your liking before overdoing it.

Can I make this without ice cream?

This milkshake is a classic recipe that uses ice cream as the main ingredient. For a recipe, try this vegan recipe for coconut shake without ice cream.
