Ingredients for Roasted Prosciutto-Wrapped Figs
Not rocket science, this appetizer is just 2 simple ingredients. I have a huge fig tree in my yard & make this recipe weekly all summer long.
For an added punch of flavor, top the figs with blue cheese - optional. If you love stinky cheeses & fruit, check out my recipe for Pear & Gorgonzola Pasta - heavenly!
- Fresh Figs - I am using large ripe juicy Mission Figs. Also try Brown Turkey, Calimyrna, & Celeste in summer or fall.
- Prosciutto - Thinly sliced prosciutto is perfect for wrapping around the fruit. This cured ham brings added salt & a savory touch.
- Blue Cheese - The optional ingredient adds a tangy & sharp contrast to the sweet & salty combo.

How to Roast Figs with Prosciutto
This fast Italian appetizer couldn't be more simple. Like my recipe for Fried Spaghetti with Eggs, it's ready in just 3 easy steps & 15 minutes. It's a great last-minute recipe that is fancy & gourmet, without a lot of fuss.
Here are the easy steps for making roasted prosciutto-wrapped figs:
- Wash and Cut the Figs
- Wrap Figs in Prosciutto
- Cook the Prosciutto-Wrapped Figs
1 - Wash and Cut the Figs
Preheat the oven to 400° & grab a baking sheet. I recommend using a cooking spray or lining the pan with parchment paper.
Wash and dry the fresh figs. Remove any stems. Using a sharp knife, stand up each fig and slice each in half vertically. (if the bottoms appear tough, slice horizontally to remove "the eye or ostiole")
2 - Wrap Figs in Prosciutto
Line up the figs with the cut side facing up on a baking sheet. Space them out and top some with blue cheese if using it.
Slice each piece of prosciutto horizontally so one slice becomes 2 long narrow strips. Wrap each strip around each fig half with the ends coming together on the top.
Hint: If the prosciutto is hard to separate, try my "freezer trick". Place the package in the freezer for about 10-15 minutes. Chilled slices separately so easily.
TIP: This recipe can be made ahead of time. It is great for parties or holidays when you are cooking a lot. Assemble them up to a day ahead of time, refrigerate, & cook just before serving.
3 - Cook the Prosciutto-Wrapped Figs
Roast the figs for 5 minutes in the preheated oven. Carefully remove them from the baking sheet to a plate for serving. They will be hot and soft so I like to use a slotted spoon to move them.
Enjoy while warm. To spice things up, I also like to drizzle on a bit of hot honey or balsamic vinegar. This is so good it inspired me to make another favorite, Fig & Brie Bruschetta.
Storing & Reheating
Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Enjoy them cold, at room temperature, or reheat them in a hot oven or toaster oven for a few minutes. I do not recommend freezing these.
FAQ
Figs are actually inverted flowers, not a fruit. Wow - so much more to learn about figs too if you don't know where they come from since fig trees have no blossoms.
If you wish to make this a 5-minute recipe, all the ingredients can be eaten cold or at room temperature safely. Making it great for packing for beach days or camping, lunches on the go, or to enjoy with a glass of wine on a picnic.
Prosciutto is a dry cured ham. The Italian meat has origins in Parma. It is not from the pork belly of the pig; therefore, is not a type of bacon.
Roasted Prosciutto-Wrapped Figs
Equipment
- baking sheet
Ingredients
- 6 fresh figs
- 6 slices prosciutto
- 2 tablespoons blue cheese optional
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or spray with nonstick spray if needed.
- Wash and dry the fresh figs. Remove any stems. Using a sharp knife, stand up each fig and slice each in half vertically. If the base/bottom is tough or woody, slice it off.
- Place the figs, cut side up, on the baking sheet & top with blue cheese, if using it.
- Cut each slice of prosciutto in half longways. This is so each strip is a long narrow piece & now you have 12 strips. Wrap each strip around each fig half with the ends coming together on the top.
- Once the oven is preheated, place the figs on the center rack to cook. Roast the figs for 5 minutes.
- Using a spoon, lift the figs gently off the baking sheet & arrange on a serving platter.** the figs will be soft so using tongs will squish them, a spoon is best.
- Serve while warm. For added flavor drizzle with balsamic vinegar. Enjoy!
