Ingredients for Fig & Brie Bruschetta
For this appetizer, first course, or small plate recipe, all you need is 6 ingredients. The key to making the best bruschetta with fruit & cheese is using fresh quality ingredients. Plump juicy figs, freshly baked bread, & quality brie cheese turn a quick & simple recipe into a bruschetta every foodie will love.
- Crusty Bread - Use your favorite artisan or rustic loaf of bread that will render large slices (not a baguette), Ciabatta or Sourdough is best.
- Olive Oil - Italian classic fruity oil is ideal for toasting the bread to make bruschetta toast.
- Garlic - Fresh whole cloves are needed to rub on the bread before toasting for that classic flavor.
- Fresh Figs - Ripe fruit that is in season such as Mission Black, Turkish Brown, Adriatic, Kadota, & Calimyra are common varieties.
- Brie Cheese - A wedge of double or triple cream soft-ripened cheese with a thin rind pairs perfectly with sweet figs.
- Hot Honey - The perfect sweet, spicy, & sticky drizzle for the top. Make it homemade with my Hot Honey Recipe or buy Mike's Hot Honey.

How to Make Bruschetta with Fresh Figs
This appetizer comes together in just minutes. Toasty bruschetta topped with cheese & fresh fruit is ready. It makes a great last-minute appetizer recipe for parties.
Here are the easy steps for making this recipe:
- Make the Garlic Toasts
- Add the Brie & Figs
- Top the Bruschetta & Serve
1 - Make the Garlic Toasts
There is very little cooking time when making homemade bruschetta. Most of the work in this recipe is prepping the ingredients to assemble later.
Begin making fig & brie bruschetta by preparing the bread, fruit, & cheese. Place the bread on a long wooden cutting board. Using a sharp serrated bread knife, slice the loaf into ½" thick slices.
Drizzle the olive oil over one side of each slice of bread. Slice the garlic cloves in half & rub the exposed side all over the bread.
With the garlic side facing up, toast the bread in a toaster oven or under your oven broiler. You want it on medium heat to toast for 2-3 minutes or until the edges just start to turn golden brown.
While the bread is toasting, prepare the other ingredients. Wash and dry the fresh figs. Remove the stems and trim off the bottom. Next, slice the fig into slices horizontally of even thickness.
Slice the brie into even slices that are similar in size to the width of the bread slices. The small edges with rind are perfectly safe to eat. I leave them on but you may trim them & remove them if desired.
2 -Add the Brie & Figs
For a make-ahead recipe, stop here. Store the prepped figs & cheese in the refrigerator to use later. Place the bread in an air-tight container to store on the counter or pantry.
If planning to enjoy this immediately, begin layering and stacking now.
Once the bread is ready, time to layer each slice with the remaining ingredients.
Begin with a single layer of brie cheese slices. Line them up so most of the bread is topped.
Add slices of figs on top of the cheese layer. Add 3-6 slices - whatever your heart desires & however best they fit. My figs were large & plump so 3 nice slices lined up along 3 slices of brie fit beautifully.
Hint: For a salty touch or if your figs aren't very sweet - sprinkle on a bit of flaky sea salt directly over the figs.
3 - Top the Bruschetta & Serve
Drizzle on some hot honey with a spoon or through a squirt bottle.
Check out all the sticky, sweet, creamy, colorful, & fresh goodness. Everything should stay on the bruschetta as you pick it up. If you want smaller bites, cut each into 3 pieces between the brie slices.
It will be crispy & soft in every bite. The amazing texture of chewy figs, gooey brie, crunchy rustic bread, & thick honey is irresistible.
Substitutions & Variations
Here are some great recipe variations & ingredient substitutions that can be made.
Substitutions
- Bread Loaf - Instead of a large loaf, turn this into crostini by using a baguette that will yield small bread rounds when sliced.
- Figs - If fresh figs are not in season, use a fig jam or soft yet dried figs.
- Garlic Cloves - Substitute with a sprinkle of garlic powder instead of fresh garlic.
- Hot Honey - Use a drizzle of agave syrup for anyone with a honey allergy.
For anyone with a gluten allergy, use a loaf of gluten-free bread.
Variations
- Mild - Use regular honey instead of hot honey.
- Deluxe - Add thin slices of prosciutto between the brie & fig layer.
- Nutty - Add crushed pistachios on top.

FAQ
Though they are similar there is a difference between these two appetizers. They are both sliced bread traditionally served with a variety of toppings & Italian ingredients. Crostini is a smaller bite of thinly sliced bread & can be toasted or untoasted. On the other hand, bruschetta is typically rubbed with fresh garlic & drizzled with olive oil before toasting - then the toppings are added. This is the difference between a crostini vs a bruschetta.
