The Why
Why do I need to make this recipe? Here are all the reasons why I cannot get enough of this recipe & why you will love it too.
- No fillers or artificial ingredients, just simple real cream, sugar, & fruit.
- No cook, eggs, or custard needed for this ice cream recipe.
- It tastes like a staycation on a cone with yummy island flavor.
- Real full-fat dairy yields the best flavor - no coconut milk, non-dairy, low-fat, or fat-free milk.
- A great no bake cold treat to enjoy all summer.

Ice Cream Maker Needed
Yes, this is a recipe that needs churning. It is not complicated and takes just a few steps and ingredients. But if you want a no churn option, try this recipe for mango ice cream with condensed milk.
The hardest part of this recipe is remembering to freeze the ice cream maker insert the night before so it is ready when you want to make ice cream. Or buy one with a compressor, no waiting. Check out some of the best brands of ice cream makers to buy.
Ingredients Needed
This easy recipe for mango ice cream is made with simple ingredients. You only need five ingredients to make this old-fashioned ice cream recipe.
It is an old-fashioned ice cream recipe with hints of vanilla. Like my homemade mango popsicle recipe, the mango flavor really shines & is intense.
Here are the ingredients needed to make mango ice cream from scratch:
- Fresh Mango - peel & remove the pit. Frozen chunks that have been thawed can be used as a substitute.
- Heavy Cream - do not substitute, this gives it richness & a decadent texture.
- Whole Milk - the full-fat dairy helps give it a smooth gelato consistency (do not use a substitute like low-fat or skim)
- Sugar - real white sugar, no substitutes.
- Vanilla Extract - the floral notes of this classic ice cream flavor is the perfect pairing with mango.
See the recipe card for quantities & substitutions/variations.
How to Make
*** Ensure your ice cream maker will be ready to freeze the mixture in about an hour. This usually means the insert should be in the freezer the night before. ***
Here are the easy steps for making mango ice cream in the ice cream maker.
- Make the Mango Puree
- Mix & Chill the Ice Cream Base
- Churn the Ice Cream
- Freeze & Serve
See the recipe card for full instructions
1 - Make the Mango Puree
Begin by cutting the two fresh mangos into large chunks. If you have never cut a mango before, this is a great tutorial on HOW TO CUT A MANGO.
Combine dice mango pieces with ¼ cup sugar in a measuring cup into blender. Puree them in the blender until smooth.
2 - Mix & Chill the Ice Cream Base
In a medium bowl, use a hand mixer to beat cream, milk, remaining sugar, & vanilla and beat until combined. Next, add the pureed mango mixture and beat using the hand mixer until combined and smooth.
TIP: I find it is best to have a very cold mixture before putting it into the ice cream maker insert. Therefore, I highly suggest that you place the bowl in the freezer for 30 min to get the mango mixture very cold before going it into the ice cream maker.
3 -Churn in the Ice Cream Maker
My Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker holds 1.5-quarts. Make sure you are using one big enough to hold everything.
When the time has come set up your ice cream maker and get the insert ready and the machine running. Now that the mango mixture is chilled, slowly pour the mango mixture into the ice cream maker insert as it is going around.
Freeze in the ice cream maker according to your manufacturer's steps. For my batch in the Cuisinart ice cream maker, this recipe took about 15 minutes to freeze & churn.
4 - Freeze & Serve
Scoop out the fresh mango ice cream and place it into a freezer-safe container. It will need to freeze this for 3-5 hours. It will then be ready to scoop & enjoy.
How Long to Freeze before Serving
Check it for consistency and for the soft or solid-state you desire the homemade ice cream to be. For a more soft-serve mango ice cream, freezing for about 3 hours may be right for you.
For a very solid ice cream ideal for scooping onto cones, it may need to freeze for 6+ hours. I froze ours for 4 hours and it came out soft and creamy but just solid enough to scoop. DELISH!!!
Storing Mango Ice Cream
Store in an air-tight container in your freezer for up to 30 days. Remove the ice cream about 5 minutes before you want to eat it as homemade ice cream tends to be more solid and dense once frozen all the way through.
Top Tips & Equipment
All of these great tips are shared in the recipe card. But these are so good and important they are worth highlighting so you don't miss them.
- Make sure the freezer insert for your ice cream maker is frozen solid if using one.
- Chill the base before adding to the machine.
- Freeze for 3-5 hours before trying to scoop it, less time yields a soft-serve consistency.
- This recipe needs to be made in a 1.5-quart or large ice cream maker.
Final Notes & Behind the Scenes
Here is my recipe for success - including what I learned, funny stories or bloopers, and more from creating & testing this recipe.
- Make sure the mangoes are ripe & soft. Most regular grocery stores carry them or try farmer's market in summer or Asian markets.
- Using low-fat milk or omitting the heavy cream will make this icy & not smooth; I do not recommend any variations.
- This once exotic fruit is now more common with some grown in the USA & there are many types from all over the world such as honey, francis, haden, & other varieties.
- Scoop with ube or coconut ice cream for twice the island flavor.
- If you went for a double scoop, what other flavor would you add?
Best Ever Mango Ice Cream (with Ice Cream Maker)
Equipment
- ice cream maker
- hand mixer
- Blender
Ingredients
- 1.5 C fresh mango cut into chunks
- ¾ C granulated sugar divided
- 2 C heavy cream
- 1 C whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Ensure your ice cream maker will be ready to freeze the mixture in about an hour. This usually means the insert should be in the freezer the night before.
- Peel and cut up the mangos into large chunks. Add to a blender or a Ninja capsule and add ¼ cup of the sugar. Blend until it is a smooth puree.
- In a medium bowl, use a hand mixer to beat cream, milk, remaining ½ C sugar, & vanilla and beat until combined. Next, add the pureed mango mixture and beat using the hand mixer until combined and smooth.
- Place the bowl in the freezer for 30 minutes so the mango mixture is very cold before it goes into the ice cream insert.
- Get your ice cream machine ready and slowly pour the chilled mango mixture into the cold insert. Let your ice cream maker do all the work.
- Run the ice cream maker for about 15 minutes or until it is ready. It should be the consistency of soft-serve ice cream and look similar to the photo above.
- Scoop out the fresh mango ice cream and place it into a freezer-safe container. You will need to freeze this for about 3-5 hours. It will then be ready to serve after it chills for hours.
- When it reaches the firmness you desire, scoop it into bowls or onto ice cream cones. ENJOY!
Notes
- Use thawed frozen mango chunks instead of fresh.
- DO NOT substitute the cream or whole milk for any other dairy, use only these full-fat ingredients for best taste & texture.

Can you use frozen mango chunks instead of fresh mango?
Angela says
Yes you can, defrost & drain them first. Then blend as the recipe is written.
Colin says
This is a great, simple recipe. I have made the mango version and have since substitute the mango for banana that worked out great. Then I tried crushed up Oreos, also a success. I had used jarred mangoes that were very sweet so I used half the sugar and we liked it. All other versions have since been half the sugar. It might freeze harder without the sugar as "anti freeze" but most of it is eaten fresh from the ice cream maker anyways. Thanks for posting this recipe!
Angela says
It is a great recipe and I am glad you are finding a lot of success with it. The vanilla base that this builds on is start of several of my ice cream recipes. Try the plum recipe I have - it is outstanding!
