Savory, sweet, & sensational! These yummy Philly Cheesesteak Sliders on Hawaiian Rolls are stacked with seasoned sliced beef, caramelized onions, and melty Provolone cheese for the ultimate appetizer or snack. They are so easy & perfect any time of day so bake a batch today.

Why this Philly Cheesesteak Slider Recipe is the BEST: My top tip is to use the shaved beef from Trader Joe's so prep & cooking is quick & easy - plus the meat comes out tender & juicy!
No need to travel to Philadelphia for a taste of this traditional meat & cheese hot sub sandwich. They are usually big, hearty, messy & tasty. These are less messy and smaller but they are every bit as delish.
This was inspired by my recipe for Philly Cheesesteak Pasta Skillet Casserole on this site, as a great twist on the classic sandwich. Ok, now we cook!

Ingredients
Here is everything you need to make sliders with steak, cheese, & onions. All you need is 6 ingredients and a few spices from your pantry.
I am using Trader Joes' Shaved Beef for this recipe. I like to finely chop the steak so it's easier to bite through - I do this in my recipe for a classic Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich on a hoagie roll. (just like Pat's King of Steaks does or leave it in big slices like Geno's Steaks does)
Here are important notes for some ingredients:
- Trader Joe's Shaved Beef Steak - the thinly sliced beef is perfect or or slice a rib eye or sirloin thinly.
- King's Hawaiian Rolls - the small sweet rolls are fluffy, buttery, & the best rolls for these little cheesesteaks.
- Onion - thinly sliced sweet yellow or white onion.
- Provolone Cheese - thick sliced is best
- Worcestershire Sauce - the salty umami condiment boosts the savory meat flavor.
- Butter - melted salted butter for brushing on top.
- Spices - garlic powder & paprika for flavoring & a deep color in the buttery topping.
OPTIONAL - Cheez Whiz, the processed cheese spread is also a Philly favorite.

How to Make Philly Cheesesteak Sliders
This recipe comes together in 30 minutes. Little to no prep, a few minutes to saute & a quick bake in the oven - easy! Perfect for game day or your next party.
Begin by preheating the oven to 375°F.
Here are the easy steps for making cheesesteaks on Hawaiian rolls:
- Cook the Steak & Onions
- Layer the Sliders
- Bake in the Oven
See the step-by-step instructions with photos below plus the recipe card at the end of the post.
1 - Cook the Steak & Onions
While the oven is preheating, it's time for cooking the onions and beef in a skillet
Over medium-high heat add a tablespoon of butter to the pan. Once melted, add the sliced onions and cook for 5 minutes or until softened.
Add the chopped shaved beef & Worcestershire sauce to the onions. Stir and cook over medium-high heat until all the beef is cooked through; about 2-3 minutes.
2 - Layer the Sliders
Now it is time to build these sandwiches with all the yummy ingredients.
Slice the King's Hawaiian Rolls horizontally in the middle. Place the tops to the side and add the bottoms to a 7x11 baking dish (or sheet pan).
Top the rolls with the beef and onion mixture. Spread it across so it is in an even layer and covers all the edges and corners.
Next top the meat mixture with the slices of provolone cheese. Make it an even layer as seen here.
Place the top layer of the buns over the cheese. In a small bowl melt the remaining butter & whisk in the garlic & paprika. Use a pastry brush to cover the rolls with the buttery topping.
3 - Bake in the Oven
Once the oven reaches 375°, cover the sliders will foil and place in the oven on the center rack.
Bake the sliders in the oven for 15 minutes. Remove the foil and continue to bake another 5 minutes.
Once golden brown on top and the cheese is melted, remove the pan from the oven. Let them cool a few minutes before slicing & serving.
TIP: for crunchy dark tops, let cook an additional 3 minutes (we like them this way = crunchy, soft, gooey, & chewy)
Serving, Storing, & Reheating
Once the they have cooled a few minutes and the cheese has set a bit, it is time to cut into them and enjoy. Use a sharp knife to cut between the rolls to make 12 individual sliders.
Remove from the baking dish and plate. You can also set them out on a party buffet with additional condiments or dips. Enjoy while warm & fresh.
Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Reheat in the microwave, air fryer, or oven until warm - or eat cold - they are that good!
What to Serve with Philly Cheesesteak Sliders : Here are the best sides to make it a meal for lunch or dinner. Pair them with a Simple Spinach Salad, a bowl of Homemade Cherry Tomato Soup, or hot & freshly made Deep-Fried Sweet Potato Fries.
Recipe Tips & Behind the Scenes
Here's my recipe for success - including what I learned when testing, fun stories, recipe history, and more.
- #1 Tip -buy the shaved thin steak at Trader Joe's or ask your local butcher to slice ribeye - saves time!!
- For toasty sliders, remove the foil to brown the tops or keep the foil on the whole time for soft buns.
- You can bake these in either a baking dish or on a sheet pan, just make sure to cover with foil.
- Deluxe Version - add sliced bell peppers and/or mushrooms to cook with the onions.
- Extra Cheesy - spoon on Cheez Whiz or squirt on Easy Cheese atop the steak layer and before the Provolone.
- For an alternative try a substitute for Worcestershire sauce if you don't have any.
- Experiment to see what you like best - chopped vs sliced; wit onions or whiz? Like the cheesesteak rivalry between Geno's & Pat's there is something to love for all.
FAQ
This already cooked meat does work in this recipe. You will not need to cook it with the onions, simply layer it with the cooked onions over the bread and before the cheese slices.
You can prep, layer, & store these in the fridge up to 24 hours ahead of time. Then simply bake before you are ready to serve - great make-ahead party recipe.
